John Holland Pty Ltd were contracted to construct four new eight-storey student accommodation towers located on the University of Newcastle campus in Callaghan NSW. The buildings provide 778 beds as part of a $100million investment in student accommodation. MPC were engaged by John Holland Pty Ltd to provide structural engineering concept development and detailed design and documentation of reinforced concrete decorative façade panels, including installation sequences and support framing, proposed to be erected around the lower perimeter of each building. MPC also provided structural designs for steel support framing within the building facades, and general construction phase advice to assist John Holland’s site team with the project. The architectural detailing required extremely thin concrete panels with structural thicknesses as low as 50mm. MPC assisted John Holland in the development of concepts for fabrication and erection of the panels, including design of structural steel lifting and bracing frames, lifting anchors, and installation sequences. MPC’s design process included 3D finite element modelling of the complex lifting frames required for installation of the façade panels with limited site access.
