MPC were contracted by Hansen Yuncken to provide structural design services for this $18 million multi-storey development. Structural design of the building was carried out using 3D finite element software for modelling for designing earthquake actions and for determining the effect of mine subsidence design parameters applicable to the site. MPC utilised a foundation system of precast concrete piles supporting a stiffened waffle pod slab. This foundation system reduced tensile and compressive forces induced into the building due to mine subsidence ground movements. The structure was designed as a concrete framed building using reinforced concrete block shear walls for lateral support during wind and earthquake events. Flat plate post-tensioned concrete floor slabs for suspended levels were considered cost effective, with their slim profile assisting in minimising foundation loads and maximising floor clearances whilst enabling speed of construction compared to loadbearing wall systems.
